PS1 BIOS Error in DuckStation

Every common DuckStation BIOS error message, what causes it, and how to fix it in under five minutes.

Error: "No BIOS image found. Running HLE BIOS."

This is the most common DuckStation BIOS error. DuckStation cannot find any valid BIOS files in the configured BIOS directory, so it falls back to its internal High-Level Emulation (HLE) BIOS — a software approximation of the real thing.

What HLE BIOS means: HLE mode skips the genuine startup sequence and uses an approximate reimplementation. Most games still load, but some titles with firmware-specific dependencies will fail, and audio or save-data behaviour may differ from real hardware.

Fix 1: Check the BIOS Directory Path

Go to Settings → BIOS. Check the "BIOS Directory" field. If it shows the wrong path or a path that no longer exists, click Browse and navigate to the folder containing your .bin file. Click OK and restart DuckStation.

Fix 2: Verify the .bin File Is Extracted

If you downloaded a ZIP archive and placed the ZIP in the BIOS folder (instead of extracting first), DuckStation cannot read it. Extract the ZIP and ensure the raw .bin file (exactly 524,288 bytes) is in the folder.

Fix 3: Check File Permissions (macOS / Linux)

On macOS and Linux, DuckStation may not have read permission on a folder in a restricted location. Move the BIOS file to ~/Library/Application Support/DuckStation/bios (macOS) or ~/.local/share/duckstation/bios (Linux).

Error: "BIOS file is invalid" / No checkmark in BIOS list

DuckStation validates BIOS files against a database of known checksums. This error means the file does not match any known PS1 BIOS — it is corrupted, incomplete, or is a different type of file.

Fix: Verify File Size and Re-download

A valid PS1 BIOS is exactly 524,288 bytes. Check the file size — if it is any other value, the file is corrupted. Delete it and download a fresh copy. If the size is correct but DuckStation still rejects it, the internal data is corrupted even though the size happens to be right — re-download.

Error: Black Screen After Game Loads

DuckStation finds and loads the BIOS, the startup animation may play, but the game shows a black screen instead of starting.

Fix 1: Region Mismatch

A USA game with a Japanese BIOS (or any cross-region combination) will fail region authentication. Check your game's region and ensure you have a matching BIOS. Go to Settings → Console → Region and try "Auto-Detect."

Fix 2: Game Image Corrupted

If the BIOS works with other games but one specific title shows a black screen, the game image itself may be corrupted. Verify your disc image file is complete and correctly formatted (BIN/CUE, ISO, CHD, or PBP).

Fix 3: Try Disabling Fast Boot

Settings → Console → Fast Boot (uncheck). Some older titles that directly interact with the BIOS startup sequence require Full Boot mode to initialise correctly.

Error: DuckStation Crashes on Launch (BIOS-related)

If DuckStation crashes immediately when trying to load a game, and the BIOS directory is correctly set, there may be a compatibility issue between your DuckStation version and the BIOS file.

Fix: Update DuckStation

DuckStation releases regular updates. An outdated version may have bugs with certain BIOS files. Download the latest stable or preview release from the official DuckStation GitHub releases page.
