Which PS1 BIOS to Use
Match your BIOS version to your game library with this quick-reference guide.
The Quick Answer
Default Recommendation
If you play mostly USA games: use SCPH-1001 (NTSC-U v2.0). It is the community standard and covers the vast majority of the USA library without issue.
For DualShock games that require vibration (Ape Escape, Gran Turismo 2, etc.): use SCPH-7001 (NTSC-U v4.1) instead.
Best of all: download the full pack and let DuckStation auto-select the right file per game.
By Scenario
| Your Situation | Recommended BIOS | Why |
|---|---|---|
| USA games, general use | SCPH-1001 (NTSC-U v2.0) | Community default, widest compatibility |
| USA games needing DualShock vibration | SCPH-7001 (NTSC-U v4.1) | v4.x required for full vibration API |
| Japanese exclusives | SCPH-5500 (NTSC-J v3.0) | Best balance of compatibility for NTSC-J library |
| Early Japanese titles (1994–1995) | SCPH-1000 (NTSC-J v1.0) | Some early titles expect the original BIOS |
| European / PAL games | SCPH-5502 (PAL v3.0) | Covers the core PAL library |
| PAL games needing DualShock vibration | SCPH-7502 (PAL v4.1) | v4.x required for full vibration API |
| Multi-region library | Full pack (all BIOS files) | DuckStation auto-selects per game |
| Unsure / first time | SCPH-1001 (NTSC-U v2.0) | Safe, stable, well-documented |

Does the BIOS Version Affect Performance?
No. PS1 emulation performance in DuckStation is determined by your hardware and the emulator's internal resolution and rendering settings — not the BIOS version. Switching between v2.0 and v4.1 for the same region has no meaningful impact on frame rate or load times.
The only practical difference between versions is the vibration API support (requires v4.x) and, in very rare cases, compatibility with specific early titles that have firmware dependencies.
DuckStation Auto-Selection
DuckStation's auto-select feature reads the game's region code from the disc image header and picks the best available BIOS from your BIOS folder. If you have the full pack installed, you never need to manually switch BIOS files between games. This is the recommended approach for a mixed-region library.
